The Creative School utilizes a preschool curriculum that is thoughtfully planned, challenging, engaging, developmentally appropriate, and comprehensive. Our curriculum addresses all content areas of early learning – literacy, math, science, social studies, art, and music and movement. Classroom teachers create and implement a program that provides children with the foundation skills they need to support their cognitive, language, social and physical development. Monthly calendars provide families a chance to keep abreast of the focus of each week. An informal assessment in September and parent–teacher conference in January provide snapshots of a child’s development.
Music and Movement
Preschool programs are successful when they contain Music and Movement. Children enjoy and require movement for their development and growth. Music engages the brain while stimulating neural pathways associated with such higher forms of intelligence as abstract thinking, empathy, and mathematics. Music’s melodic and rhythmic patterns provide exercise for the brain and help develop memory. (Remember the ABC song?)
Music is perfectly designed for training children’s listening skills. Good listening skills and school achievement go hand in hand. Developmentally appropriate music activities involve the whole child-the desire for language, the body’s urge to move, the brain’s attention to patterns, the ear’s lead in initiating communication, the voice’s response to sounds, as well as the eye-hand coordination associated with playing musical instruments.

The three-year-old and four-year-old classes have a 20 minute Spanish lesson each week. Teaching Spanish to young children improves their ability to communicate, facilitates their cognitive development and provides cultural awareness. The children sing songs, dance and play simple games while learning colors, numbers, names of family and friends. The themes change monthly and will include holidays and seasons.
Once a week the children will check out a book from the Creative School library. The librarian selects and shares a story with each class. They will work on listening skills, remembering story sequences, recognizing rhymes, learning patterns and vocabulary acquisition. Most importantly they learn to love stories and books.
Weekly Chapel is provided for the 3s and 4s. WHUMC pastoral staff offers an age appropriate children’s liturgy that is approximately 15 -20 minutes. Each month features a specific theme of spiritual formation. Two or three songs are used repeatedly throughout the month so the children learn them well. Children’s birthdays are recognized during chapel with a ‘Birthday Blessing” at the end of the service.
Our Lunch Bunch is an optional extended program that is offered every day of the week from noon to 2 p.m. The children are grouped together by age group. They eat lunch, play inside and weather permitting, will go outside to the playground. Children in 2’s and Transitional 2’s are required to have a rest of 20 minutes, but follow a similar schedule as the older children.
We offer two weeks of camp in the summer Monday through Friday 9 am to 12 pm.
