Families are welcome to participate in worship and Sunday School at Walnut Hill United Methodist Church. Sunday School is held from 9:30-10:40 am for children age 3 (by September 1) through adults. Enriched Child Care is provided for Infants, Toddlers and Two year olds. This includes a Bible story, prayer and songs.
Worship Services are offered for all ages at 8:30 am and 10:55 am. During each service a brief Children’s Time is led by one of the pastors. Children below kindergarten may leave the service after Children’s Time, if parents desire to take them to the Nursery. Children Kindergarten Age and above are welcome and expected to participate in the entire worship service. Children’s Worship Packets are located at the south entry to the sanctuary and include stories, coloring pages, and crayons. A Library Book Basket is also located at the south entry. Books may be checked out and read during the service or taken home for one week, then returned.
Survival Tips For Parents Worshipping With Young Children
Parents who are just beginning to bring young children to worship are encouraged to bring a “survival kit” that might include a soft quiet toy, a small pad of paper and colored pencils or other quiet activities that are reserved just for Sunday morning worship use. Be sure to take your child to the restroom before the service so you won’t have to leave in the middle of the service. A small drink of water before worship may also be helpful.
Beginning worshippers might also appreciate help in following the progress of the service in the bulletin. In the margin next to each hymn draw a music note or a child’s face with an open mouth, as if singing. By the scripture reading, draw an open book to symbolize the Bible. By the prayers, draw hands folded in prayer. Then as each part of the service occurs, show the children the picture in the margins of the bulletin. Encourage the children to sing the hymns, even if it’s only “La-la-la.” Let them help hold the hymnal. Take the pew Bible out of the rack and turn to the scripture reading. Point to the words that are being read, even if the child cannot read the words. (Even better, bring your own Bible and follow along in it!) Show your child how to fold their hands together for prayer. When it comes time for the Pastoral Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer, fold your hands, bow your head, and encourage your child to do the same.
Some parts of the worship liturgy are used almost every Sunday: The Lord’s Prayer, the Doxology, the Gloria Patri. The words are printed in the bulletin, or referenced in the Hymnal. Help your child begin to memorize these parts of the service, even if it’s only one line at a time. They’ll enjoy singing or speaking along with everyone else. And that little bit of time to make noise in the service will be helpful to a young child!
At Walnut Hill each service begins with a time of greeting. Everyone is encouraged to say hello to those sitting near them. Please be sure to introduce your child to people sitting near you. It’s too easy for children to be invisible. They are a vital part of our church family, and we want them to know the names of adults worshipping near them, and to be known by the adults. Please don’t assume everyone knows everyone else! Be bold and turn to someone and say, “Hi! My name is….and this is my child, ….” We want to be church family to each other, and to do so we must know each other’s names!
Finally, parents with children are encouraged to sit near the front! Children are more tuned in to what is happening if they can see. The further back families with children sit, the less connected to the action they become, the more bored and restless they become. So be bold, and sit right up front!
We hope you will come and visit Sunday School and worship at Walnut Hill!
