Attention Parents! Reading books with your children is a great way to start a dialogue and introduce new words to them. When children hear new words, they have the opportunity to put those sounds in a
“sound storeroom”. The more new words and sounds they hear, the fuller their storeroom gets. So it makes sense that children with a full storeroom have an easier time learning to read.
Hearing new words is great, but it is even better if your child can speak those words and have a conversation using those words. Hearing the word “bicycle” is nice. Hearing “bicycle” and seeing a picture of one is better. Hearing “bicycle”, seeing a picture of a bicycle, and talking about it is the best.
So now that you are on board, how do you find good books and start a dialogue with your child? Here is a little guide to help you on your way.
What Kinds of Books Work Best?
Books that
-have clear pictures
-have a simple story
-are not too long
-have pictures of things that are familiar to the child
-show action and detail in the pictures
-are interesting to the child
Tips to Build Vocabulary/Start a Dialogue
-ask “what” questions
-follow answers with another question
-repeat what the child says
-help the child as needed with responses
-give answers and child repeats
-praise and encourage the child
-follow the child’s interest
Here are some examples of good books:
Benny Bakes a Cake by Eve Rice

Chugga-Chugga Choo-Choo by Kevin Lewis
Cows in the Kitchen by June Crebbin

Stay tuned for next month – there will be tips for building sentence skills and more examples of good books!
